What it is

Cognitive Defusion is an Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) technique that helps you alter your relationship to unhelpful thoughts, seeing thoughts as passing mental events rather than literal facts or commands.

Why it works

When we are "fused" with a thought, we treat it as an objective reality. Defusion techniques (such as silently prefacing a thought with "I am having the thought that...") create psychological distance so the thought loses its emotional grip:
