Opposite Action is a DBT emotion regulation skill used when an emotion's action urge does not fit the objective facts of a situation.
Every emotion carries a default action urge (anger urges attack, fear urges avoidance, shame urges hiding). Acting directly opposite to an unhelpful urge changes the underlying emotional experience over time:
“I feel ashamed so I must isolate myself and avoid everyone.”
Camic helps you identify the urge behind a strong emotion, evaluate whether it fits the facts, and execute an opposite action plan.
